September 2009 Monthly Meeting

This month’s meeting will be held on Sunday September 20th. 2009 at 10.00 am at the St. Xavier Primary School in St. Joseph. To get there you go along the Eastern Main Road to St. Joseph, turn into St. Joseph Road at the traffic lights at the Eastern Credit Union La Joya Complex and take a right turn at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, then a left turn onto a short intersection and then a right turn that leads right into the premises of the St. Xavier Primary School.

Show Theme

The theme for our show this year is “ORCHIDS IN A MAGICAL GARDEN’ this year the Show is sanctioned by the American Orchid Society and there will be A.O.S Judges to judge the exhibits. All members are requested to support the show by displaying and exhibiting their plants. Your blooms might surprise you by winning an award.


Entries for the show will be received on Thursday 1st. October 2009 from 3.00pm to 9.00pm.Members entering plants for the show must ensure that their plants are properly labeled and the writing must be in Block Letters this is to ensure that the officers at the registration desk will be able to identify the plant, any plant without a label will not be able to be identified.

Please note you are also required to prepare a legible list of the plants you are entering to include the plant name and where practical, the parentage.This list should be grouped according to genus eg.Cattley, Dendrobium, Vanda etc., This will allow for easy and quick registration and allow you to keep your own record of the plants you have entered. All plants will be required to be brought to the registration desk for verification to ensure entry in accordance with the Show Schedule and to avoid errors of registration that could lead to invalidation of entries for judging. Plants without a name can be entered into the show for display purpose only, and will not be judged.
Judging of the show will commence at 9.00 am on Friday 2nd. October 2009

Gala Opening

The Show under the patronage of the President of the Republic will open with a Gala Opening on Friday 1st. October 2009 at the Ambassador Hotel. The tickets for this event are priced at $125.00 each. The event will give patrons first view of the show in a wonderful setting while being served with select food and refreshments, for a truly entertaining evening. The dress code for the event is elegantly casual.
In order for this event to be a success we are appealing to all members to sell tickets.

Other Participants

The Barbados Orchid Society of Barbados and the Grenada Orchid Circle of Grenada have accepted our invitation to participate in our show. Venezuela will also be participating along with our sister societies, and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Setting up of Displays.

Members wishing to mount a display should keep in mind the theme of this year’s show. The sizes for displays are in the category (small, medium or large) Members can contact our show designer Curtis Lutchman at (H) 868-675-0956 or mobile - 868-768-9577 for their requirements.
The show will also be catering for the following exhibits: (1) orchid arrangements, and (2) orchid and flower arrangements.

Show Entry and Tickets.

Tickets for show entry are available from the Treasurer or members of the Management Committee. Members are requested to take show entry tickets to sell which are priced at $25.00 while entry at the door is $30.00
Members are also requested to take Gala Tickets to sell these are priced at $125.00 each.

Assistance at the Show.

Assistance is required for the Sale of tickets at the door, and at the Information Booth for both days. The roistering for these two portfolios is as follows: to 1.30 pm and 1.30 pm to Volunteers can call Diane Huggins @ 632-8147 and give her your preference of day and time. We also require assistance on Thursday evening for the set-up. From 3.00 pm to 9.00pm.

Return of Show Trophies

Members who received trophies won at the October 2008 show are now required to return these trophies in a clean and polished condition at the monthly meeting on Sunday September 20th. 2009 Trophies not returned at the monthly meeting should be sent to any member of the Management Committee. The deadline for return of these trophies is September 20th. 2009.



Reminder: TTOS Members Photography contest

All entries for the TTOS Photography contest must be from a digital original and submitted as a digital file (CD) and as an 8” x 10” print. The original photo must have been taken by a digital camera. The camera must be 8 MP (Mega pixels) and above.
All entries must be accompanied by an official entry form which may be downloaded from the TTOS website or obtained from a member of the Management Committee.
Entry form must be securely attached to the back of the photo.

Entries for the photography contest will be accepted up to September 15th 2009.

Entries will be returned to all participants.

Christopher Watson and Diane Huggins will collect entries in the north.
Gopaul Chackan and Stacey Williams will collect entries in the south.

Prizes will be awarded and photos displayed at the October Show.

Membership Dues.

At the annual General Meeting held on July 19th. 2009 a decision was made to increase the annual membership fees effective July 20th. 2009. The annual subscription has been increased to $125.00 for ordinary members and $240.00 for joint membership. New members will have to pay $125.00

New Members

We wish to welcome the following new members to the Trinidad & Tobago Orchid Society:
Sheshnarine Latchman, Ena Khan,Nekisha King and Mario & Ingrid Young. As members, you will now be constantly exposed to the world of orchids, learning about their culture, how to display and exhibit orchids and gaining in-depth knowledge by accessing reading material from our well stocked library.
